New way to do field measurments

I was so excited today! I got my new Occipital Structure Sensor with a mounting bracket for my iPad Air (4 years old).

I followed all the instructions sent to me via email after my purchase. I had to download 6 apps and then go back to the original YouTube video where I learned of this amazing device, to find that I had to download yet another app (the right one this time), called Canvas.

As soon as I opened the app, it recommended that I get a new iPad, because mine will be slow and sluggish and probably not have enough memory. Oh, and it is highly recommended that I get the Wide Vision Lens ($43.00 with shipping).
I think I mentioned that I hate field measuring.  It is time consuming and I am always terrified that I will make a mistake.  I even went back to my client to triple check my measurements from last week. Kitchen cabinets must be exact.

Next steps.  I found I can get $110.00 back on my iPad if I upgrade. Well, now I have 2 choices. The new iPad Pro comes in 2 sizes: 10.5" and a monster at 12.9".  So naturally, being of small stature (4'-11"), I would prefer the smaller version, but to my dismay, the Structor Sensor bracket isn't made for the 10.5", only the gigantic 12.9".  Did I mention that the humongus one is also $150 more?

News Flash:  Alex from Canvas responded to my email for help in a "flash".  He was so helpful. They are making a bracket for the 10.5", but it won't be available for about 2 months. They are willing to exchange mine, which makes me happy.  In the meantime, I'll play with my new toys and buy a new iPad Pro (10.5"). I'm sure I will be thrilled in a few months and won't mind field measuring so much.

Things to think about when hiring an Interior Designer:

What is the goal of your project?
  • What specifically do you want to accomplish?
  • Do you want better room flow?
  • Better use of the space?
  • An updated look and feel?
How much time should the project take?
  • Do you have a deadline?
  • How many options do you need to see before you trust your decision?
  • Do you already have a contractor you like?
How much do you think the project will cost?
  • Do you have a budget?
  • Have you researched smiliar project?
  • How many estimates do you want to get?
3 Areas of Cost:
  • Design (plans, scope of work)
  • Labor (contractor)
  • Materials (furnishings, finishes, etc.)

"A new report jointly produced by Philips Lighting and the World Council on City Data (WCCD) reveals that the city of Los Angeles made energy savings of 63 percent in 2016 by implementing such a system (implementing LED lighting), generating cost savings of $9 million and reducing its annual greenhouse gas emissions associated with public lighting by 47,000 metric tons. This is equivalent to the greenhouse gas emissions from almost 10,000 passenger vehicles driven for one year."

Field measuring is the one and only thing that I don't like about being a Designer, but I know how critically important it is to have accurate measurements. So, I just purchased the Structure Sensor to go with Canvas IO.  I can't wait to try it out.  You have to see this video:  https://canvas.io/sketchup. I am hoping that this will save me time when field measuring.

This is the sensor that will attach to my iPad so that I can scan a room. I'll let you know how it goes.
